Our first family is a father, mother and 10-year-old daughter. The mother and father left Burma and lived in a refugee camp in Thailand for 11 years. The daughter was born and grew up in the camp. They first arrived in Missouri, where they stayed 9 days, then decided to come to Arizona to be near friends. They have been here for 2 months. The mother laid out a mat for us to sit on during our visit because they have no sofa or chairs in their apartment. The daughter is attending school. The father has a job working in a saw mill and is suffering due to kidney and gall bladder stones. This family has relatives still in the refugee camp and hope to be united with them soon.
The second family is also from Burma. The mother and father have a 20-year-old daughter, a 15-year-old son and a new born son. They lived in a refugee camp in Thailand for 13 years. They said in the camp they had to be in their home by 5 pm with lights out. They enjoy the freedom and peace they have here to go where they want when they want. The father is taking English classes and working. The son attends school. The mother takes care of the new baby.
